Pronunciation tip: How not to get shot in the Netherlands

I’ve finally made another pronunciation tip video. This one is about how to say Dutch place names – at least close enough to the Dutch that you won’t sound like a German spy.

    When I had a Christmas job in Worthing, Sussex, UK, one December in 1954 (I think it was), I was put on a truck delivering parcels in my then home town, Worthing. The full-time mailman (postman) was a born Sussex person with the original accent (even then being superseded by the Brighton version of the London [Estuarian] accent). Anyway, when this man said “house” (which he often did: “Hey, you, take this packet to that house over there”) he pronounced “house” as if it was the Dutch word HUIS (as I heard again when, a couple of years later, I was doing my military service on the German/Netherlands border). Whether or not there is a historical connection between Sussex-ish and Flemish/Dutch, I do not know. — Anyway, I liked your “Dutch pronunciation guide”. It took me back…
